Thin Is a Feature: A Field Guide to the iPhone 17 Family
Four species, one habitat. We went looking for the differences between the iPhone 17 lineup and catalogued what we found.
Every few years a product category produces a species nobody saw coming. In the iPhone’s long evolution, the 17 generation brought one: a phone whose defining trait is what it leaves out. Before we meet it, a word about the habitat.
The iPhone 17 family lives at the top of the carrier catalog, where prices are highest and promotions are most generous. It comes in four forms. They share a generation and, at the surface, a family resemblance. Underneath, each has evolved for a different way of life. Here is our field guide.
Specimen one: iPhone 17
- Habitat
- Pockets, school runs, offices. Anywhere a phone is expected to just work.
- Temperament
- Agreeable. Bright colors, quick chip, nothing to configure.
- Camera
- A dual rear camera system that covers everyday shooting.
- Endurance
- Rated for up to 26 hours of video (per our sheet).
- Best for
- People who want the newest generation without the Pro price.
The standard 17 is the most common sighting in the wild, and that is its strength. It takes display and everyday speed that used to be Pro territory and hands them to the person who just wanted a great phone. The colors run bright: black, white, blue, green and pink.
Specimen two: iPhone 17 Air
- Habitat
- Coffee tables, jacket pockets, anywhere weight is the enemy.
- Temperament
- Elegant, minimalist, a little contrarian.
- Camera
- A single 48MP rear camera. One lens, chosen on purpose.
- Endurance
- Rated for up to 24 hours of video (per our sheet).
- Best for
- Anyone who has ever looked at their phone and wished it were half as thick.
This is the rare specimen. The Air is the thinnest iPhone yet, and its whole personality is a deliberate trade: a single rear camera and a shorter battery rating in exchange for a body you hardly feel. It comes in silver, black and rose gold in our data. If you love ultra-wide shots or put battery life above everything else, look elsewhere in this guide.
Specimen three: iPhone 17 Pro
- Habitat
- Studios, job sites, conference rooms. Wherever a phone is a working tool.
- Temperament
- Serious. Built for sustained performance rather than short sprints.
- Camera
- A triple 48MP system, per our sheet.
- Endurance
- Rated for up to 29 hours of video (per our sheet).
- Best for
- Photographers, creators and anyone who pushes a phone hard.
The 17 Pro keeps a 6.3-inch body and the A19 Pro chip, and pairs them with a camera array where every lens carries a 48MP sensor. It is the compact option for power users, with enough stamina for a full day of shooting and editing.
Specimen four: iPhone 17 Pro Max
- Habitat
- Planes, trains, long afternoons on location.
- Temperament
- Generous. Largest screen, longest battery.
- Camera
- The same triple 48MP system as the Pro.
- Endurance
- Rated for up to 33 hours of video, the highest in the family (per our sheet).
- Best for
- People who want everything and are happy to carry it.
At 6.9 inches, the Pro Max is the apex of the genus. It matches the Pro on chip and cameras and adds screen size and endurance. It is the one we would take on a long trip.

A note on specs
The tables below are drawn from our own tracking sheet and are meant for quick comparison. Retailers and Apple may list details differently, so check the official specifications for anything you are relying on.
Where the best prices live
New generations tend to have the highest sticker prices, so the monthly numbers and promotions matter most here. The live tables show what we are tracking right now. When the price gap to last year’s model is large, compare the two before you commit.

Specs and prices load live from our tracking sheet. Estimated total = upfront + monthly × term + activation fee; excludes plan price, taxes and trade-in credits. Deals with $0 upfront and $0 monthly rely on bill credits, so we mark them conditional and do not rank them. Verify with the retailer before buying.
