Three Phones Walk Into a Carrier Store: The iPhone 18 Family
The Pro Max, the Pro and the first folding iPhone all want your money. We let them argue it out, then checked the prices.
A note before the curtain rises: this is a work of fiction. Phones do not talk, and certainly not in carrier stores after closing. The specs, however, come straight from our tracking sheet, and the prices in the tables further down load live. Everything between those two facts is for fun.
It is 8:55 on a Saturday night. The store is dark except for the glow of a demo table. Three phones sit in a row on the glass.
Act one: the introductions
Pro MaxI will keep this short, because I am the largest. Six-point-nine inches of display, an A20 Pro chip, three 48MP cameras, and a battery rated for up to 45 hours of video. Forty-five. I will wait while that lands.
ProYou have been waiting for that moment all week.
Pro MaxI have.
ProFine. I am the same chip, the same triple 48MP cameras, and the same 256GB to start, in a 6.3-inch body that fits in a back pocket without a negotiation. My battery is rated for up to 29 hours. I will not apologize for that. I will point out that I weigh less than your ego.
The third phone says nothing. It is closed, a slim slab of Dark Titanium. Then it opens like a book.
DuoHello. I am a 7.6-inch display folded inside a pocketable frame. The A20 Pro runs me too. I have a 48MP dual Fusion camera system and up to 44 hours of rated video playback. I am Apple’s first folding iPhone, and yes, I will get compliments on the train.
Act two: the argument
Pro MaxRanked by endurance, I win. One more hour than you, Duo, and sixteen more than the Pro.
DuoBy rated hours, you do win, by a single hour. But I fit a tablet-sized screen into my pocket. You do not fit in a small pocket.
ProNeither of you fits in a small pocket. I do. That counts for more than people admit. Most people do not need a phone that doubles as a field manual. They need one that lasts a full day and does not make the commute awkward.
Pro MaxCooling, a smaller Dynamic Island, a variable aperture main lens. These are our descriptions, remember. We came from the same sheet.
DuoWhich also says “historic.” I would like it noted that I was described as historic.
The demo table hums. Somewhere, a price tag flutters in the air-conditioning.
Act three: the bill
ProHere is what nobody wants to say out loud. The question is not which of us is best. It is who each of us is best for, and what that costs this month versus over the whole term.
DuoThe honest answer is that I am the priciest. A foldable always is. If you want me, you are paying for the novelty and a second screen.
Pro MaxAnd I am the safe splurge. All the Pro hardware, the longest battery rating, no folds to wonder about.
ProAnd I am the one most people should look at first, because carrier promotions on me can get very small. Check the table. Then check the fine print on the plan and the trade-in.
The short version
- iPhone 18 Pro: the best starting point for most people. Pro cameras and the same chip in a compact body, often with the lowest monthly numbers.
- iPhone 18 Pro Max: pick it for the biggest screen and the longest rated battery of the two slab phones.
- iPhone 18 Duo: pick it if the folding screen is the point. It is the premium option, and its price shows it.
Before you buy
The specs and descriptions here come from our own tracking sheet, and our tracker currently lists only three iPhone 18 models: the Pro Max, Pro and Duo. Apple’s official specifications are the final word, so check them for anything you are relying on, such as battery life or camera details.
Curtain
The store lights come on at 9:00 the next morning. The phones are, of course, just phones again. But the argument is a fair one, and it is the same one you will have with yourself at the counter. Use the live tables below to settle it with numbers.

Specs and prices load live from our tracking sheet. Estimated total = upfront + monthly × term + activation fee; excludes plan price, taxes and trade-in credits. Deals with $0 upfront and $0 monthly rely on trade-in and bill credits over the full term, so we mark them conditional and do not rank them. Verify with the retailer before buying.
