The Year the Cable Changed: Living With the iPhone 15 Family

USB-C, titanium, and a pill-shaped island for everyone. Four phones, one turning point, and the question every shopper still asks: which one?

Somewhere in your house there is a drawer of Lightning cables. Frayed, mismatched, each one labelled in your memory by whoever borrowed it last. The iPhone 15 family is the year that drawer started to retire.

USB-C took the headlines, but the 15 generation did something subtler: it split a lineup cleanly down the middle. Two phones for people who want an excellent everyday device. Two for people who want to feel a titanium frame in their hand. Three years on, all four are still perfectly capable, still carried by the big carriers, and, this is the part your wallet cares about, often among the lowest monthly payments in our tracker.

iPhone 15: the quiet default

If the 15 family were a cast of characters, the standard iPhone 15 would be the friend who is never the loudest in the room and somehow always the most reliable. It runs the A16 Bionic chip, pairs a 48MP main camera with a 12MP ultra wide, and brings the Dynamic Island, the pill-shaped cutout that turns timers, music and navigation into small living animations, from a Pro-only novelty to something everyone gets.

The colors lean soft: black, blue, green, yellow and pink. The battery is rated for up to 20 hours of video playback. It is the phone we would hand to a first-time iPhone owner, or to a parent upgrading from something much older.

The best phone is usually the one that disappears into your day.

iPhone 15 Plus: the marathon runner

Same chip, same cameras, stretched across a 6.7-inch screen and fed by a bigger battery rated for up to 26 hours of video. If your phone is also your boarding pass, navigator, cinema and e-reader, the Plus is the one that makes it to bedtime without a charger.

There is a quiet appeal to it, too. Plenty of people want a big screen without paying for a Pro. The Plus is that phone, no apologies.

iPhone 15 Pro: the compact titanium

Here is where the family gets its edge. The 15 Pro keeps a 6.1-inch body but swaps in the A17 Pro chip and a titanium frame that makes it feel noticeably lighter than the steel Pros that came before. The old mute switch gave way to the Action Button, which you can program to open the camera, flip on the flashlight or run a Shortcut. The camera system adds a 3x telephoto to the 48MP main and 12MP ultra wide.

Battery is rated up to 23 hours. For anyone who wants Pro features without a Pro-sized phone, this is the one to beat.

iPhone 15 Pro Max: the periscope

The Pro Max earns its name with a 5x optical telephoto, folded sideways inside the body like a periscope. It is the reason to choose it: concert photos from the back row, soccer games shot from the parking lot, the bird on the far branch. It starts at 256GB of storage, carries a 6.7-inch display, and is rated for up to 29 hours of video, the longest in the family.

Quick verdict

  • Lowest cost, great phone: iPhone 15 or 15 Pro, depending on how much camera you want.
  • Battery above all: 15 Pro Max, with the longest rated video playback in the family.
  • Small hands, Pro features: 15 Pro.
  • Big screen on a budget: 15 Plus.

So which one should you buy today?

The honest answer is the one whose strengths match your day. A three-year-old flagship is no longer the newest thing, and that is exactly why it can be the smartest purchase. Older generations tend to carry smaller monthly payments, and the Pro models still hold up on cameras and speed. Check the live tables below, then put the 15 next to the 16 to see what the extra year really costs.
